What is Fenugreek?

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is a plant of the leguminous family (Leguminosae). The plant is also called fenugreek or 'Greek hay'. The plant is used as a culinary herb. It originates from Mesopotamia and was already known in the Mediterranean in ancient times. Today, fenugreek is also grown in Central Asia.

Fenugreek seeds and leaves are used in cooking. These are used both dried and fresh. They have a spicy, bitter taste and a light smell of fresh hay. Fenugreek is mainly used in Indian and Pakistani cuisine (curry), Arabic cuisine (pastries and bread) and North African cuisine (meat and fish). The Indian name is Methi. Fenugreek seed is also a well-known and popular sprouting seed to grow as a sprouting vegetable. Many health food stores sell seed packets for that destination.

Fenugreek is rich in iron and copper. Fenugreek contains saponins and coumarins, which can help with vein problems. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and promotes bile production.
